The Curious Ghost

The sky wasn’t just dark, it looked and felt like nothing, a big black hole. The whole atmosphere of the night felt engulfing and oppressive.

Few people were out at such a late hour in any case. The little grey-white wisp of a ghost felt free to wander up and down streets and through buildings at times like this. Only on a particular type of night did she feel comfortable enough to observe the real, solid humans as freely as she wished.

she didn’t have the confidence to venture out into the light, but her fervent curiosity drove her on the cold dark nights. It could easily get her into trouble if she pushed too far.

This night, she had quickly become enamoured with a girl. The girl was looked similarly small and fragile as herself, but she was somehow more colourful, and more lively, more alive. The ghost followed the girl all through the night, as was customary when she found someone interesting enough to shadow. She watched quietly with big eyes while the girl went about her business, as she sat and read a book, while she ate her favourite dinner and while she laughed and had fun with friends. The girl’s life looked joyous.

The ghost had always felt safe the knowledge that she was invisible to the real people.

But then, as she walked softly behind her new idol in the street, without warning the girl just stopped dead in her tracks. She then whirled around to face her pursuer, and stared the wispy ghost dead in the eye.

“What do you want, I see you following me. What do you want?”

The ghost was horrified to have been caught out. And strangely, she didn’t even know the answer.
